In 1993 I drove it almost the entire way across the country. I had to leave it somewhere in eastern Pennsylvania to go up and around NYC to Connecticut. It ends in a not very interesting or attractive place-somewhere in the wastelands of Jersey (I looked it up on the map once, wondering if it actually ended in NYC, which would be cool, since it starts in the city of SF, but no... it doesn't) Having driven its entire length I can say that California has a lot of the most attractive parts, along with Utah.

It's not so much where it goes, just that it goes.
